The Google update for Android phones will ping you for texting while walking

Ever accidentally bumped into someone while texting?

Google is releasing a feature to help Android users with this problem, aptly named ‘Caution’.

The feature is being tested on the beta version of the Google Digital Wellbeing app.

You can also use this app to track your smartphone usage and make sure you don’t overuse it.

The Heads Up feature works by notifying you if you feel you are walking while your smartphone is unlocked.

It alerts users to be aware of their surroundings.

The warning may come in the form of a pinging sound if your phone is not on silent.

It is also expected to pick up whether you are walking, jogging or running.

The Google support page explains, “The app uses sensors in your phone that detect motion to see if you’re walking or not, while using location to see if you’re walking in or out.”

You don’t need to share location information to use the feature.

If you grant location rights, the job can take into account whether you are indoors or outdoors.

Google added, “While we’ve tested this feature to be as accurate as possible, don’t just rely on this feature to stay safe.

“Please always exercise good judgment and use this feature as a friendly reminder if you find yourself distracted while walking.”

It is not yet clear when Heads Up can be rolled out to all Android users.

To use Heads Up now, you can join the beta program in the Digital Wellbeing app.
