  • Code in the latest Android 12 DP 3 suggests that the Google Pixel 5a processor could be the Snapdragon 765G.
  • Specifically, this is the same processor in the Google Pixel 5.
  • This isn’t a set deal, but it would make sense with the rumors surrounding ‘Whitechapel’.

We are sure that a new Pixel from the “a” series is on the way, known as the Google Pixel 5a 5G. Aside from the fact that it exists and looks a lot like the Pixel 4a 5G, we don’t know much else.

That may have changed today. Thanks to some Android 12 DP 3 code detective work 9to5Googleit looks like the Pixel 5a could have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G under the hood. That’s the same processor that powers Google’s current flagship Pixel 5.

Code in the version of Android 12 launched today refers to both ‘barbet’ and ‘sm7250’. The former is supposed to be the code name for the Google Pixel 5a, while the latter is definitely the model number of the Snapdragon 765G.

Of course, that’s not a real confirmation that the Pixel 5a could have the Snapdragon 765G. However, if you take into account that the Pixel 6 will likely contain Google’s proprietary silicon – codenamed “Whitechapel” – the Pixel 5a with a standard Qualcomm chip makes sense.

Of course, if the Pixel 5a is priced below $ 400, like any other ‘a’ series phone, the Pixel 5 will suddenly appear way too expensive. It’s possible Google could lower the price of the Pixel 5 in conjunction with the launch of the Pixel 5a, if this rumor turns out to be true.
