The Google Assistant loses a huge list of books to read

There are many useful voice-activated apps and games on Google Assistant, including some that are useful for parents with young children. For the past few years, Google has supported read books on Google Assistant devices, but now most of them have disappeared and Disney stories have been removed from Little Golden Books.

Spotted by Android policeGoogle recently updated one of its support pages to note that many of its read Little Golden books for Google Assistant are no longer available. The company only lists the books that are available, including:

  • Aladdin
  • Lion King
  • Frozen
  • Frozen 2

What has been removed? Three times what is really available. Twelve books have been removed, one book is no longer on Google’s list, but is still active. However, all 17 books are still on Disney’s website as compatible. The pre-February 23 titles list included The Three Little Pigs, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Coco, Jack Jack Attack, Moana, Toy Story 3, Peter Pan, Mulan, Mickey Mouse and his Spaceship, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Mickey Mouse Goes Christmas Shopping and Ara the Star Engineer. The latter is still available when prompted on Google Assistant speakers and smart displays.

Previously, you had access to all these 17 books via the Assistant with commands such as ‘Hey Google, let’s read with Disney’. Then you could pick a book and start reading, but now most of those books are gone.

At this point it is unclear why these titles were removed. Google, Disney, and Little Golden have shaken up this library in the past, but this time most titles have been completely removed. It is possible that this is a licensing problem, but we will have to wait and see.
