Genesis is participating the battery-electric vehicle package with its new Electrified G80The first electric car from Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand comes standard with all-wheel drive and a convenient function that allows the car to act as an emergency power supply to power devices.

The Genesis Electrified G80, unveiled on the 2021 Shanghai auto show, is the purely electric version of the G80 sedan that Genesis says is the core of its sedan lineup. It has the same looks as the petrol engine G80, with some minor changes such as a revised dashboard and rear bumper. I’m really digging the teal paint.

The sedan comes standard with a four-wheel drive that is controlled by the Disconnector Actuator System (DAS). The oddly named feature switches the car between AWD and RWD based on driving conditions, ensuring optimum efficiency. Genesis says the E-G80 has 365 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque and will sprint from 0 to 100 mph in 4.9 seconds.

It also features a Vehicle to Load system which has a maximum power of 3.6 kW. This allows owners of the Electrified G80 to use their car as a generator to power household appliances in an emergency. A few other EVs have this, but it’s a nice feature to see them equipped in more vehicles. That power is more than the Ford F-150 Hybrid’s 2.4 kW Pro Power Onboard system provides – a feature that has proven useful. during the freeze in Texas earlier this year.

Genesis has not provided full specifications for the battery pack, but says it will deliver an estimated maximum range of over 310 miles based on NEDC standards; Using the Korean EV rating, the Electrified G80 has a range of 265 miles. The package supports 350 kW fast charging, which the company said will replenish the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 22 minutes.

The car retains the familiar G80 interior with some upgrades. Genesis says this interior comes with recycled fabrics, natural materials, and the leather uses natural dyes.

To add an extra touch of luxury, it has an anti-noise system to reduce drones on the road in the cabin and an adaptive suspension that uses a camera to determine how to adjust itself.

While Genesis hasn’t made anything too mind-blowing or world-changing, it has spawned a strong EV contender. But if I can suggest a better name, call it the G8E. You can send my check by mail.

Genesis has not disclosed the costs, but does say information on the release in the US and Canada will come later this year. The range doesn’t sound impressive, but we’ll see what happens when it reaches America. I hope it retains that sweet teal color when it hits our shores.
