The Gathering announces crossovers with Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000

Magic: The Gathering will announce new crossovers with other popular fantasy properties, including Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000Hasbro will announce the crossovers at an investor event later today, along with a reorganization that will spin Wizards of the Coast into its own division. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that news Warhammer 40,000 and Lord of the Rings both will come Magic: The Gathering, with Lord of the Rings get a full extension. It is currently unclear whether Warhammer 40,000 will also get a full expansion, or if this will be a Secret Lair drop that looks like a crossover with The living Dead

Wizards of the Coast had a huge 2020, with over $ 800 million in revenue thanks to it Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and DragonsThe Hasbro division is on track to double its revenues between 2018 and 2023 thanks to a surge in the two core properties. While Magic: The Gathering has found new popularity thanks to the growth of the digital world Magic: The Gathering Arena game, Dungeons and Dragons has added millions of new fans thanks to an accessible ruleset and increased exposure in pop culture. The two brands in particular have also had multiple crossovers in recent years, with two D&D campaign setting books published based on Magic: The Gathering settings and an upcoming Magic: The Gathering card set based on the D&D Forgotten Realms institution due out later this summer.

Under Hasbro’s reorganization, the new Wizards & Digital division will house Wizards of the Coast’s assets, with an emphasis on expanding existing games, creating new ones, and overseeing digital licensing. The other divisions will be a consumer projects division that includes toys, while entertainment will handle licensing, distribution and production of film and television content.

Several new video games will also be announced later in the day.
