The Dominican Foreign Minister points to the need for negotiations in Venezuela that lead to fair, free and transparent elections

Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Álvarez declared the will of the Dominican government to participate in all dialogue initiatives to ensure a negotiated solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

The Dominican Foreign Minister believed that international actors should help create the conditions for a dialogue between Venezuelans that would allow a return to constitutionality and respect for institutionalism. The diplomat’s words were produced during his participation in the sixth ministerial meeting of the international contact group on Venezuela.

He pointed out that just as the Dominican Republic advocates for the unity of the Venezuelan opposition, the international community must act accordingly with unity of criteria in international organizations, especially before the Organization of American States (OAS), deciding that contrary to cohesion are reversed.

He considered it necessary to create the conditions for conducting practical negotiations that lead to a solution to the crisis, by initiating a process that fosters the necessary mutual trust between the parties and culminating in a fair electoral competition . , free and transparent. Elections with guarantees for all concerned groups and political actors, with the support of the international community, and in a climate of unrestricted respect for human rights.

“For this reason, we understand that all Venezuelan parties must engage in a genuine, comprehensive, inclusive, credible and respectful national dialogue that contributes to a peaceful solution to the deep crisis that that country is experiencing. The Venezuelan people must be directly the only one who has the power to determine the architecture of their democracy and leadership, ”noted the diplomat.

This ministerial meeting of the International Contact Group for Venezuela was the first in which our country took part after its accession as a full member on October 28, 2020.
