The Dominican Consulate in New York will cover Hugo Cabrera’s funeral costs

The Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in New York reported that it decided Tuesday to cover the funeral expenses of basketball player Hugo Cabrera, immortal of Dominican sport, who died at dawn in his hometown of Manhattan on Tuesday. from this city where he lived with his life partner, Marta Acta.

Consul Eligio Jáquez said that after singing the notes of the Dominican Republic’s national anthem at the consular headquarters, he asked the staff of the institution and the audience in attendance to spend a minute of silence in memory of that great athlete he named. the land in Santo Domingo and several countries.

The death of Dominican basketball glory occurred after losing the fight against pancreatic cancer diagnosed on January 10, 2020 in the city of Miami, where he received two chemotherapy trials.

Born on October 23, 1953, in Santo Domingo, Cabrera was elevated to the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame at the 1998 ceremony and to East Texas State University in the United States.

Once considered the best Latino basketball player, after his college career, he was selected in the NBA draw by the New York Knicks team, which were both his favorite and the New York Yankees.

Cabrera stood out for playing for the clubs of San Lázaro, Naco and Los Mina. His greatest achievements were between 1975 and 1977 with the national team in Centrobásquet.

During his internment, the Dominican diplomatic representative said he was waiting for his recovery and cooperated fully through Manolo Prince, who is the sports director of this consular headquarters and was his playmate for years.

Cabrera worked as an administrative dean of a high school in the city of Miami, Florida.

Jáquez mourned Cabrera’s death and offered his condolences to family, friends and the entire sports class in the country.
