Another 305 people died of the coronavirus in Italy on Sunday, the same day the country joined its European neighbors in a large-scale vaccination campaign.
Additionally, 8,913 other people tested positive for the disease the same day, far fewer than in the past few days. However, fewer tests have been conducted due to the Christmas holidays.
Italy is the country in Europe with the most deaths from COVID-19, with 71,925, but experts suspect the actual figure is much higher due to undetected cases and the lack of diagnostic tests.
On Sunday, Italy began applying the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to civilians, primarily medical workers at the forefront of the fight against the virus.
