Taxes will of course be lowered in its new 14-year deal with the Padres. But Tatis also has to honor a previous commitment, a deal he made during the off season 2017/18, when he turned 19 years old and preparing for his first full season with Double A.
At that point, Tatis signed a contract with Big League Advance (BLA), a company that offers select minor leaguers advance payments in exchange for a percentage of their future earnings in Major League Baseball. Neither Tatis nor BLA has disclosed the exact percentage he owes the company.
