The crashed Tiger Woods SUV had a “black box”. The sheriff’s detectives have issued a search warrant for data from the device.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has issued a search warrant for data from the “black box” of the SUV Tiger Woods was driving when it crashed last week, CBS News has confirmed. The story was first reported by USA Today.

Department spokesman Deputy James Nagao said no more about the investigation into the rollover crash in which the golf legend sustained serious injuries to his lower leg, ankle and foot that required lengthy emergency surgery.

To get a black box warrant, USA Today stressed, investigators must determine that there is a probable cause of it being a felony, even if it is just a felony.

But, the paper said, a sheriff’s deputy “downplayed the warrant as a routine part of their investigation. He said he didn’t consider it a criminal investigation, but rather a due diligence.”

In this sense, Sheriff’s deputy John Schloegl told USA Today: “We have to reconstruct the traffic accident, if there was driving recklessly, if someone used their cell phone or the like. We determine if a crime was committed. If there was no crime,” we close the case and it was an ordinary traffic accident. “

USA Today also reported that the department has decided not to try to get an arrest warrant for Woods’ blood because it is trying to find out if he was “under the influence of drugs” at the time.

Schloegl said there was “no probable reason” for receiving such an order.

The day after the crash, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told a press conference, “We are not considering any charges in this crash.”

As he came around a bend in the road, Woods’ vehicle hit the median strip and thrust into oncoming traffic, Villanueva said. The SUV then hit the curb and began to roll over before finally coming to a stop on an embankment about 30 meters from the road.

Villanueva said 45-year-old Woods could still be affected by driving violations based on what the traffic investigation reveals, but said a charge of reckless driving, a felony, was not expected.

He had previously said there were no early signs that Woods had a disability.

Woods’ SUV – a 2021 Genesis GV80 – was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Photos and video of the scene showed extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. The golfer’s clubs and other personal items were removed from the scene, and a crane later removed the crumpled SUV.

Doctors told CBS News they expect Woods to walk again, but health experts said the injuries will certainly affect his game.
