The COVID vaccine doesn’t mean you can let your guard down: WRAL.com

Health officials say while the number of people getting vaccinated in the state continues to rise, you shouldn’t wait.

Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in North Carolina are declining, but doctors say we need to vaccinate more people before we can get together in groups.

Some people who get the vaccine relax their social distance and wear a mask after their first injection, Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC.

“I don’t think people should feel completely safe after the first shot,” Gottlieb said on CNBC.

Experts say this is especially true for someone who is older or has pre-existing conditions and may be more vulnerable to coronavirus.

Majority of the population must be immune to coronavirus in order to achieve herd immunity and to safely remove masks. Experts estimate that 70% of the U.S. population – that’s more than 200 million people – would need to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, the Mayo Clinic said.

Researchers say it is not yet clear whether a coronavirus infection makes someone immune to the virus, so social detachment, wearing a mask and vaccines are essential to stop its spread. We could continue to wear masks until next year, says expert Dr Anthony Fauci.

“We need many more people to be vaccinated,” said Dr. David Wohl, infectious disease expert at UNC. “I really hope so [this] summer time will be very different from last summer time. “

According to recent data from the CDC, nearly 84,000 people in North Carolina have received their second dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
