The chasm between Destiny 2’s trials and its weapons of trial at nightfall is wide

This week is a big one for hunting high-end loot in Destiny 2. We saw the launch of Grandmaster Nightfalls and the surprising reactivation of Trials of Osiris with that mode’s tremendously powerful hand cannon low-hanging fruit on 3 wins / failures.

But I have to say that in the first offering of Ordeal / Grandmaster loot here, if this has to be something similar to Trials, but on the PvE side, I just don’t see it.

For Ordeals we have:

Shadow price – An archetype assault rifle in a horrible place.

The swarm – A machine gun that doesn’t differ significantly from most others, and MGs aren’t exactly what you usually spend your heavy slot machine on in PvE for obvious reasons.

The palindrome – Perhaps the most sought after of the bunch, but a sub-par archetype in the era of the 120s.

But trials? The loot of trials has gotten out of hand these days. Desperado Messenger. Two-tapping Igneous Hammer. Astral as more or less the only viable non-sunset primary PvP shotgun. A chain reaction sword. A fusion rifle with a completely unique charging advantage. A rocket launcher with tons of godroll options. A sniper who still has Vorpal. The list goes on and on.

Test Weapons have Bottomless Grief, a new perk that is the PvE equivalent of Celerity. And since Celerity sucks, it sucks. Beyond that, there’s little to make GM loot feel powerful or unique, even with the veteran versions. The new Big Ones mod is a good start, but it’s best used with… Trials-appropriate gear, most of the time.

Maybe this is just the beginning. The loot of trials didn’t start out as anything all that special one, I think, with Astral being the only thing anyone cared about for a while. But I was actually hoping they learned from that before the launch of GM adepts, and that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Maybe this will change over time, but at this point, I certainly don’t see the point in dabbling GMs specifically for that loot. And in lower levels that are more farmable I can even get god roll drops like a Feeding Frenzy / One for All Shadow Price and still … bad considering where that type of weapon resides, and there are certainly no There are no unique benefits with the only new one, Bottomless Grief, which is something you actively want avoid

If the loot of Trials can evolve, I think the loot of trial / grandmaster can too. But right now, I think the scales have been tipped wildly in Trials favor, which is why you’ll see PvE players jumping off cliffs for a hand cannon instead of running Nightfalls this week. I hope this changes in the coming seasons and that this loot will be just as coveted as the Trials loot is now.
