Sterling broke through the long-awaited $ 1.35 barrier on Wednesday morning after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said progress had been made towards a post-Brexit trade deal between the UK and the European Union.

Von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament that while she could not say whether or not there would be a deal, “there is now a road to an agreement” and that the coming days will be critical.

“We have found a way forward on most of the issues, but two issues remain unresolved: the level playing field and fishing,” von der Leyen said, according to Reuters.

“I am pleased to report that the governance issues are now largely resolved. The coming days will be decisive.”

The British pound climbed 0.4% against the dollar as a result of the comments and broke above the $ 1.35 mark, and the euro also gained 0.4% against the dollar, staying just below $ 1. 22 hang.
