(CNN) – A tented camp in Matamoros, Mexico, where hundreds of migrants remained in dire and dire conditions after being subject to Trump-era policies requiring them to remain in Mexico until their immigration court was cleared in the United States, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday.
In recent years, migrants have set up camp in Matamoros, waiting to enter the United States. Immigrant advocates called the situation a humanitarian crisis just yards from the United States’ southern border that arose as a result of Trump-era harsh policies.

“The migrant camp in Matamoros has recently been hit hard by extreme weather in northern Mexico. As President Biden continues to rebuild the country’s border management in a way that reflects the values of the United States, addressing humanitarian needs in Matamoros has become a priority, ”the ministry said in a statement.
“We will work with the government of Mexico and partners on the ground to facilitate the safe processing of current camp residents who qualify for this program.”
Newcomers to the camp will not be able to enter the United States through this process, DHS said. The registration and process “will be performed as soon as possible” with the established health and safety protocols. People should also go through a security check and get tested for COVID-19, according to the department.
