“Westworld” star Thandie Newton is reclaiming her real name.
The Emmy-awarded British actor said she will now go through Thandiwe Newton in TV and movie credits.
“That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine,” she told British Vogue in an article published last weekend.
Thandiwe means “loved one” in Shona, a Bantu language of Zimbabwe, where her mother is from.
Newton, whose prominent credits are “ Mission: Impossible II ” and “ Crash, ” said the anglicisation of her name began at Catholic school, “ where the W of her name drifted in, out of sight and earshot, in vain. hope she feels less different, ”the magazine wrote.
The “W” continued to be “missed” from her first film credit (listed on IMDB as “Flirting” from 1991), Vogue noted, and it stayed that way for decades.
But Newton, who was outspoken in calling out racism and sexual abuse, now stands up for her real name.
“What I am most grateful for in our company right now is being with others who actually see me,” she told Vogue. “And not to be complicit in the objectification of black people as ‘others’, which happens when you are the only one.”
