Texas shatters the daily record of coronavirus cases by nearly 27K

Texas shattered its daily record for coronavirus cases on Tuesday.

The state reported 26,990 new COVID-19 cases, breaking the previous daily record less than a week ago, Bloomberg News said.

The number of new coronavirus cases on Tuesday was 41 percent higher than the previous record, which was reached on December 23.

Separately, the state set a new record for COVID-19 hospital admissions, the outlet reported, with 11,775.

Texas, like many states in the South and West, has struggled to contain a second wave of the virus that has gripped the nation in recent months.

The state has seen the seven-day average positivity rate of more than 15 percent for the past week, the Texas Tribune reported.

“If the positivity test rate is over 10 percent, that’s one of those red flags we’re starting to look at,” the tribune told Governor Greg Abbott (R) in early May.

Abbott reportedly received a coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday to boost public confidence in its safety and efficacy.

“Vaccines are safe and easy and always voluntary, never forced,” he said tweeted last week.

As of Wednesday, more than 1.6 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Texas and nearly 28,000 people in the state have died from contracting the disease.
