DALLAS Texas reported 197 additional deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, following a steady decline in the number of people hospitalized with coronavirus disease.
The Texas Department of State Health Services also reported 2,921 new confirmed cases of the virus and a further 715 probable cases on Sunday. The state has reported more than 2.28 million confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic and 42,936 fatalities.
The true number of cases is believed to be much higher because many people have not been tested and some who become ill show no symptoms.
There were 5,696 people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Texas on Saturday, the most recent day for which state records were available. That is a decrease of more than 1,400 compared to a week earlier.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, more than 15% of COVID-19 tests in Texas have come back positive in the past week. University researchers say Texas has fully vaccinated more than 6% of the population.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that resolve within weeks. But for others, especially older adults and those with pre-existing health conditions, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
