With quarterback Deshaun Watson specifically asking the Texans to interview top contenders like Robert Saleh and Eric Bieniemy, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Texans are apparently considering calling * checks * Josh McCown head coach.
Oddly, the Texans are not one of nine teams McCown played for in his very mediocre but somehow long NFL career.
I’m sure this will come across very, very well.
Personally, there are many, many layers I could go to with my general dislike of how the Texans are handling this whole situation. I’ll start with the fact that even Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network is already doing his best to turn this admittedly “crazy” idea for Texas fans into a “dah gum it’s so crazy it just might work” kind of situation.

Perhaps choosing a coach who is actually, you know, a coach is a better way to cope with your team clearly going through a major transformative period. Call it a rebuild, call it a redesign, call it whatever you like – the Texans face a steep climb back to a competitive roster, thanks in large part to Bill O’Brien’s ineptitude.
Again, please try to tell me there is no racing problem in the NFL coaching circuit as a journeyman backup QB without any coaching experience is considered a more than offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy who has worked under one of – if not the – best head coaches in the NFL in Andy Reid, has won one Super Bowl in that role and is one more game away from returning to the Big Game.
If the Texans want to anoint a journeyman quarterback to become their franchise’s head coach, they just have to trade what I can almost certainly call a hugely pissed off Deshaun Watson to Miami in exchange for Ryan Fitzpatrick, and then Fitz can step into the role of player. / coach. They would save money by not having to pay a coach! Win win!
I’m not sure how they plan on running these to Deshaun Watson, but personally can’t wait to find out.
