Tesla’s solar panels and Powerwall batteries become a package deal

If you’re still considering buying a Tesla Powerwall or outfitting your roof with redesigned solar panels, you should probably consider buying both or going elsewhere altogether. Elon Musk revealed in one tweet that “Tesla Solar Panels & Solar Roof will only be sold as an integrated product * with * Tesla Powerwall battery starting next week,” creating the kind of brand synergy he has been looking for.

Electrek reported last month that Tesla’s website began telling potential Powerwall buyers that the only way to get the requested battery would be solar panels too, so it seems this policy is working in both directions. In addition to tying two items together with one big ticket, Musk went on to say that “Tesla will be able to unlock higher capabilities for free next month via software update” for Powerwall 2, and that for new installations, solar energy will be fed exclusively to the battery.

Of course, like Electrek Also mentioned, even if you already have a contract with Tesla for your panels, it may have changed the deal by a higher price than originally estimated, citing “roof complexity”.
