China is one of the most important electric vehicle markets in the world. In 2020, Tesla sold 30% of its vehicles to that country.

Electric carmaker Tesla said on Chinese social media on Wednesday that the cameras in its vehicles will not be triggered outside North America, Reuters reports.

“Even in America, car owners [Tesla] they can freely choose whether they want to activate their use (of the camera system). Tesla is equipped with a network security system with industry-leading security levels to ensure user privacy, ” the company wrote on the Weibo social network.

This statement comes just weeks after the Chinese military banned the use of Tesla cars in its military and housing complexes amid concerns that cameras embedded in the vehicles are capturing and collecting sensitive data.
