When domestic terrorists stormed the Capitol in a coup attempt on Wednesday, the world sat on screens watching the drama unfold. So is the sports world, as athletes from the past and the present had taken over what was going on.

Basketball legend Bill Russell questioned the security response, wondering how different things could have been if the insurgents had been black, while also noticing the presence of a Confederate flag in the Capitol.

Rex Chapman, another former NBA player and now prolific tweeter, also marveled at Capitol Police not dispelling the crowd violently, as it did with so many Black Lives Matter protests last summer.

Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman followed up on Chapman’s tweet, calling the incident for what it was:

Stroman had more to say, calling back to the summer protests and the response of the National Guard.

Ditto for Raven’s wide receiver Dez Bryant, who knew that if there had been a different racial makeup to the group that stormed the Capitol, many people would have been killed.

Free-agent outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. reacted to all of this just as amazed as the rest of us, just amazed to see this happen.

Just like his sister, Chicago Sky guard Diamond DeShields.

Niner’s defensive back Richard Sherman has this to say about these domestic terrorists:

And the safety of Broncos Justin Simmons made this astute remark:

While Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy wondered how exactly to classify the criminals who invaded the Capitol …

… Freedom Guard Layshia Clarendon knew exactly what they were doing.

Of course, as with so much regarding social issues and sports lately, it was the WNBA that led the way.

Tim Tebow?

Not so much.
