With the first doses of coronavirus vaccines starting to ship across the US, a grim reality remains: many states continue to break newly reported COVID files, hospital admissions and death records almost daily. Virtually no corner of the country is untouched, and we are now starting to see the full effects of travel and gatherings over the Thanksgiving holiday. But as the numbers continue to skyrocket everywhere, one state has become the site of the worst COVID outbreak in the country: Tennessee. Read on to find out how bad it is in the Volunteer State, and to learn more about what could put you at risk, visit If You Have This Blood Type You Are at High Risk for Serious COVID.
Tennessee has taken Rhode Island’s unenviable top spot after days of reporting steep rises in cases. The state published a seven-day average of 7,978 new cases per day, up 68 percent over the past two weeks, according to The New York Times. Tennessee is also home to nine of the 20 metropolitan cities that are currently seeing sober growing outbreaks in the US, adjusted for population size.
The recent rise in the number of cases also comes as Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee continues to reject advice from local, state, and federal health advisers when granting statewide mask mandates. Currently, the laws allow local and state officials to establish mask mandates, with Lee arguing that using them is a matter of personal responsibility that trumps government overregulation.
Still, critics urge Lee to take further action. “We are losing this war quickly and our hospital capacity is now under threat,” Bill Frist, MD, former United States Senate majority leader representing Tennessee and former heart and lung transplant surgeon, wrote in a Facebook post Dec. 15. “The vaccine will not help us in time for this wave. We need state (and provincial) leadership to act.”
Unfortunately, Tennessee isn’t the only state to see cases increasing. Read on to find out which states have the highest number of daily new cases per 100,000 people, according to data from Covid Act Now on Dec. 16.
