Teenage woman in custody, older man injured in Fort Lauderdale shooting

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police say a 32-year-old woman is in custody after a shooting that took place Tuesday morning in which a teenage boy and an elderly man were injured.

The suspect has been identified as Gwendlyn Whitfield-Dorsey, of Fort Lauderdale, and she will face two charges of attempted first degree murder, police said.

Detectives say they think it was a domestic incident, although they are still investigating and have not disclosed her relationship with the two injured.

Sgt. DeAnna Greenlaw said in an email to Local 10 News that officers responded just before 8:30 a.m. to a shooting in Block 2900 of Southwest 13th Court. While on the scene, they heard gunshots in the immediate vicinity and ran to investigate.

According to Greenlaw, the officers encountered an armed woman in the front yard of a house and ordered her to drop the gun she was holding.

Officers later determined that the woman was responsible for disarming the suspect during the altercation. The suspect, another adult female, was identified and taken into custody without further incident, ”said FLPD in a press release.

Greenlaw confirmed that a teenage boy and an elderly man were injured in the shooting and taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

She said the teenager was in a critical but stable condition, while the older man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“Detectives will be in the area to put together the details of what exactly happened before our agents arrived,” Greenlaw said.

The identity of the victims has not yet been disclosed.

“It’s unusual in this area. Very quiet area, ”said Joe Smariga, who lives nearby.

A motive for the shooting also remains unclear at this point.

“We are just grateful to be able to put an end to this quickly without anyone else getting hurt,” said Interim Assistant Chief Frank Sousa.
