Taylor Swift opened her refreshingly low-key medley and awards show with “Cardigan,” from her surprise 2020 release, the offbeat “Folklore” – a collaboration with writer-producers Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.
Swift, 31, quickly morphed into an amber-colored singer-songwriter diva with ‘August’, followed by an equally naturalistic ‘Willow’.
The general consensus on social media was that she was less flashy than usual performances were decidedly “dreamy”.
It’s been 13 years since Swift earned her first-ever Grammy nomination for best new artist.
She was 18 years old when she lost that 2008 trophy to the late Amy Winehouse – but she’s had an impressive string of Grammy wins over the years, including two Album of the Year trophies for ‘Fearless’ from 2010 and’ 1989 ‘from 2016.’
Now Swift has been nominated for six Grammys in 2021: she is in the running for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album (“folklore”), Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance (“Cardigan”) and Best Song Written For Visual Media (“Beautiful Ghosts” from the 2019 soundtrack of the doomed movie “Cats”).
“It’s pretty wild how much time has passed since my first Grammy nomination. I’m still lucky to still be a part of this evening, ”Swift told ET during a practice break earlier this week. “I think the advice I would give myself when I was younger is probably to always focus on how much I love music when the going gets tough.”
If she wins the grand prize, Swift will become the first woman to win Album of the Year three times.
Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon are among the few male artists to have won album of the year three times. Behind-the-scenes talents have also won the award three times, including superstar songwriter producers Phil Ramone, Ryan Tedder, David Foster and more.
