Taiwanese mission investigates possible reconstruction aid in Sula Valley

With the intention of know the damage left behind by storms Eta and Iota, and to explore possibilities for reconstruction aid, a diplomatic mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and representatives from the Taiwanese company Overseas Engineering & Construction Company (OECC) met with the Commission for Flood Control of the Sula Valley (CCIVS).

During the work session, the visiting delegation and technicians from the CCIVS explored emerging investment projects to rebuild the hydraulic system of the Sula Valley.

After taking note of the affected areas, the President of the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan), who met with the CCIVS, spoke. Augusto Chan Fu Chan, reported that “we have seen and analyzed the damage caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota and see if we can improve the construction projects of the Sula Valley later.”

When asked if he was impressed by the damage caused by Eta and Iota, he replied, “Very sorry, I have never seen such damage and we never thought the damage was so great.”

“So this damage leaves a very big impression on us and we obviously want to make the greatest effort to help with the programs or funds for reconstruction,” he said.

He stated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) “shows brotherly solidarity with Honduras”.

Financing

The Minister of the Interior, Justice and Decentralization, Hector Leonel Ayala, accompanied the diplomatic mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and members of the OECC to inform them of the damage caused by the storms.

During the meeting, Minister Ayala explained to the Taiwanese delegation about the damage to road infrastructure and bridges, as well as the impact on the flood control infrastructure.

“ They are going to analyze within their government and within the capabilities of the private sector, to offer funding or whether some resources may be available even in bilateral cooperation, whether that is what is currently being handled between both countries or some additional financial availability ”, the official detailed.

Ayala said that “they have been presented with the social housing matrix and that 120 million lempiras are immediately needed for flood control.”

Likewise, he explained to them “that in the long run a complete overhaul of all the canals should be carried out, such as the Chambers and Martínez canals, which are the reliefs of the Ulúa and Chamelecón rivers, which should also be dredged,” he said.

The diplomatic delegation was accompanied by representatives from the construction company OECC, based in Guatemala and responsible for the development of multiple infrastructure projects in that country and in Haiti.

In the context of national reconstruction Following Hurricanes Eta and Iota, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu pledged to respond with resources as soon as possible and promptly via phone call with the Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
