Taiwanese man was fined $ 47,000 for breaking home quarantine seven times

(CNN) – A Taiwanese man has been fined $ 1 million New Taiwan Dollars ($ 35,000) for repeatedly violating his home quarantine.

The unnamed man, who lives in Taichung in central Taiwan, did a home quarantine in his apartment building after returning from a business trip to mainland China and violated it at least seven times, according to local media.

According to TTV News, the man left his flat seven times in just three days to go shopping, get his car repaired, and more. He reportedly got into a fight with one of his neighbors when they confronted him about leaving his home during quarantine.

Taichung local government confirmed that the man was returning from the mainland on January 21. According to Taiwanese regulations, he must be quarantined for 14 days.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen condemned it as “a serious crime” and added that the man should “receive a severe punishment.”

In addition to the fine – which is the highest imposed in Taiwan to date – the man must pay NTD $ 3,000 ($ 107) per day for the cost of his quarantine. The Taiwan government reimburses quarantainers $ 1,000 NTD ($ 35) per day, for which he is no longer eligible.

Taiwan is one of the greatest success stories in the world when it comes to controlling the coronavirus. The self-governing island closed its border early, conducted mass testing and contact tracking, and strictly enforced quarantines.
In December 2020, a labor migrant from the Philippines was fined $ 3,500 for violating his quarantine for a total of eight seconds. The man, who was quarantined in a government-sanctioned hotel, briefly entered the hallway outside his room and was captured on CCTV.

As a result of these tight controls, the island of 23 million people has recorded only 889 cases of coronavirus and seven deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
