The Epic Games Store opens every week a free game, which you can add to your library with no strings attached. This week’s offer is Survive Mars, the space-faring city-builder game about … survival on Mars. It is available until March 18th.

Survive Mars, if you haven’t played it, it’s more or less exactly what you imagine when you think Cities: Skylines Goes To SpaceYour goal is to create a sustainable human outpost on Mars. You do this by purchasing resources (metal, concrete, etc.) to build subsistence structures (food, water, oxygen, energy) to support domes of various sizes that can accommodate human lives. If you liked that Cities, you will like it Survive Marsalso. (Both games are published by Paradox Interactive.)

in contrast to Citieshowever, Survive Mars move an extra focus on people, instead of structures. You can compile the manifesto for any rocket you send from Earth to Mars. Each person you can choose from is randomly generated, down to their traits and callings. Want a bunch of alcoholic botanists who love to play video games? Or how about a few hypochondriac party animals who exercise 25 hours a day? Anything is possible on your version of Mars.

In the core, Survive Mars understands that good urban planning is not just about roads and buildings and cutbacks. It’s about people. Funny that you have to go into space to learn that lesson.

There are great tunes too

In other ‘games you can get for free’ news, Metro 2033 is currently available on a discount of 100 percent on the Others PC store, which is named after a 19th century energy source. It will remain at that price point until March 15.
