Super Bowl Bummer: CDC warns against ‘cheering’ at parties

Under new guidelines from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, football fanatics will have to play a little bit of defense to enjoy a safe Super Bowl this Sunday.

The federal agency says virtual guard parties or scattered outdoor gatherings are the safest bets for catching the big game during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sports junkies are reminded to wear masks, keep a social distance, avoid crowded and poorly ventilated indoor areas and wash their hands to “make small gatherings safer”.

But if you venture into a gathering with members outside of your household, the CDC warns against “shouting, cheering out loud, or singing” when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Slap, stomp your feet, or bring (or make) portable noise makers instead,” the agency said in its updated “small gatherings” guidelines.

And don’t forget to enjoy the usual game day buffet – the CDC advises partygoers to “bring your own food, drinks, plates, cups, utensils and condiment packs.”

The CDC also suggests that people bring their own “food, drinks, plates, cups, cutlery, and condiment packets” to a meeting.

University of South Florida professor of public health Jay Wolfson told the Tampa Bay Times that everyone now needs to know the ingredients for “a ‘responsible’ Super Bowl get-together.”

“Wear the goddamn mask, especially if you’re around people you don’t live with, are socially distant, wash your hands, carry disinfectant and use common sense,” he said.

“This year, apply the discipline so that your family and friends can enjoy better next year and beyond without the residue of COVID.

“We need it. We deserve it,” Wolfson said of the Super Bowl. “Let’s not make it the last thing we ever do.”
