Student Eau Claire Memorial was shot dead in downtown Washington on Thursday

EAU CLAIRE, Delete. (WEAU) – A freshman from Eau Claire Memorial High School has been seriously injured after a Thursday afternoon shooting.

The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office says it happened in a house on the 3400 block of Pomona Drive in Washington City – just south of East Clairemont Avenue in Eau Claire.

Deputies say two young people are involved in the shooting. One of them, the freshmen of the Eau Claire Memorial, suffered a severe gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff’s office says more information will only be released if and when it is appropriate.

ECASD Chief Inspector Mike Johnson released a statement saying, “This is an incredibly difficult time for our school and community. Your concern for the students, the family and our Eau Claire Area School District community is greatly appreciated. “

Johnson says there will be additional support staff on hand next week and the days after the winter break for students and staff who may need help dealing with the emotional trauma associated with events like this.
