While the Cleveland Browns are dealing with some roster runoff due to COVID-19 issues, Sunday’s opponent at FirstEnergy Stadium is voluntarily reducing the roster.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers will not have three permanent Pro Bowlers in their lineup by Week 17. Edge rusher TJ Watt, defensive lineman Cameron Heyward and center Maurkice Pouncey will join starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on the sidelines instead of against the Browns. All four are healthy enough to play, but they stay put.
The absence of Watt, the front runner for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, is a huge boon to Browns’ attack. Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield received multiple questions about Watt at press conferences this week, and his reverence and respect for the All-Pro was reflected in his responses.
Cleveland must win the game to secure a postseason berth. Pittsburgh has already taken out the AFC North crown and cannot earn a bye in the wildcard round.
