A Sri Lankan beauty queen who caused a brawl over the crown has been arrested over the altercation on stage, police said on Thursday.
Reigning “Ms. World” Caroline Jurie was arrested on charges of “simple pain and criminal cause” in connection with the chaos at an election Sunday night in Colombo, the BBC reported.
Jurie, who is from Sri Lanka, started the uproar when she jumped on the podium when she found new “Mrs. Sri Lanka winner Pushpika De Silva,” the outlet reported.
She snatched the crown from De Silva’s head claiming that she was actually divorced and thus disqualified from holding the title.
“There’s a rule that prevents women who are already married and divorced, so I’m taking steps to get the crown to second,” Jurie told the crowd.
Jurie instead placed the crown in second place, which led to tears and a fracas on stage.
De Silva had to be hospitalized for head injuries after the debacle, the BBC reported.
She later told reporters she would take legal action for the “unreasonable and insulting” way she was treated, the BBC reported.
Police confirmed on Thursday that they had arrested Jurie and another competitor in connection with the brawl.
Police have arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra over Sunday’s incident on charges of simple pain and criminal cause, police spokesman Ajith Rohana told the BBC.
The election organizers re-crowned De Silva and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. It was a shame how Caroline Jurie behaved onstage and Mrs. World has already begun an investigation into this issue, ”said the event organizers.
