Sri Lanka Arrests ‘Mrs World’ After Stage Violence | Sri Lanka News

Jurie was arrested for jerking off the Silva’s crown minutes after she was named Ms Sri Lanka 2020 and damaged the venue.

Colombo police have arrested the current Ms. World on a charge of assault on stage in which she pulled the crown from the head of the new Ms. Sri Lanka.

Caroline Jurie tore off Pushpika de Silva’s crown minutes after being named Ms Sri Lanka 2020 at a gala at Colombo’s Nelum Pokuna Theater on Sunday.

Jurie was last year’s Mrs. Sri Lanka and had won the competition for Mrs. World.

De Silva required hospital treatment after the incident, seen by baffled spectators in a packed theater and live audience on social media.

“We have Jurie and arrested [her associate] Chula Manamendra in connection with an allegation of assault and harm to Nelum Pokuna [theatre], ”Said senior police officer Ajith Rohana.

De Silva told outside the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station in Colombo on Thursday that she was willing to drop the charges if Jurie publicly apologized but she refused.

“I have tried to end this out of court, but she has refused,” said de Silva. “I can forgive but not forget.”

There was no immediate comment from Jurie or her attorney.

Police sources told AFP news agency that a hearing would likely take place next week and that Jurie and her associate, who crashed on stage on Sunday, could be bailed later on Thursday.

The incident

Jurie took the stage claiming that de Silva was divorced and therefore ineligible for the award.

Participants must be married to be eligible for the title. De Silva is estranged from her husband, but they are still legally married.

Organizers said they were seeking compensation from Jurie for damage to the stage and behind-the-scenes dressing rooms where various mirrors had been smashed.

Jurie has also been accused by the organizers of discrediting the event.

The election’s local franchisee, Chandimal Jayasinghe, said they were “deeply disturbed and genuinely sorry” about Jurie’s behavior.
