On Friday, December 25, the film “Soul” premiered exclusively for Disney + users, which, although an animated film, is more of a film of reflection and introspection for adults due to its content and depth.
As a film studio, Pixar has been giving the public pieces of great value since “Toy Story” in 1995, one of the most important films and loved by the public, leading them to produce a fourth installment of this saga in 2019. the emotional stamp an animated movie needs, especially for those of us who grew up with dolls.
Sometimes with somewhat irreverent productions, like the story of ‘Brave’, a girl who doesn’t fit in the mold of Disney princesses because she doesn’t want to get married or comb her hair, or ‘Coco’, a film that tells about the loss of a loved one, the last anyone can move.
But with “Soul” (or Alma in Spanish) Pixar went further. First, by using existentialist arguments, which go into an analysis of human existence: what am I doing with my life? Did I make the best decisions? I’m missing something, but how do I know what it is? Doubts that have affected all of us at some point in life.
This beautiful story focuses on Joe Gardner, a man with a passion for jazz and the journey he takes through the moments that characterized his life. A musician who has lost his passion for being transported out of his body and must find his way back with the help of a childlike soul learning more about himself, quotes the film’s synopsis.
Along the way, he meets 22, a soul who refuses to live on Earth, but Gardner shows him some of the wonders of life and eventually learns a lot from her. There are other characters like Joe’s mom, who pressures her son to choose a new job.
Set in New York City and with African American residents. This is also a cultural and musical film, and most of all fun. Director Pete Docter was a key figure for Pixar, making his directorial debut in 2001 with “Monsters, Inc.” and in 2009 he directed “Up”, another moving film, and more recently “Inside Out,” a film about emotions, for which he won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
A fundamental pillar of “Soul” is the jazz music, the piano and the saxophone that transport us to those clubs where the great musicians of history such as Louis Armstrong or Giuseppi Logan appear. Jon Batiste wrote some original songs for the film.
Another essential point is the quality of the details. In a scene where Joe plays the piano, you see real, perfect hands with impeccable definition.
Pixar movies never go unnoticed and audiences (always loyal) eagerly await their new releases. This is the first in the studio’s history, which did not premiere in theaters, but in streaming, after postponing the premiere scheduled for June 19, 2020. For many, it is the best movie of 2020, a movie that you don’t want to see more than once. The feature film leaves us with an open ending and different reflections. You were born to do something, but how do you know if you chose the right thing?
