It’s been almost six months since the PlayStation 5 launched, and today Sony announced the first major software update for it flagship game console

Sony in one blog posted today has outlined some of the new features and improvements that will appear in the April update of the PS5, which will be rolled out worldwide tomorrow.

For that feeling Limited by the PS5’s base storage of 667 GB, one of the major new improvements is the ability to save PS5 games to an external USB drive, a feature previously limited to older PS4 titles.

Unfortunately, you still can’t run PS5 games on external storage, as Sony said external drives aren’t fast enough to deliver optimal performance, which means this new feature is purely to help you clean up the PS5’s built-in SSD. (Note: The first time you download a PS5 game, it still needs to be saved to the PS5’s base SSD before you can transfer the game to an external drive.)

The real downside is that while Sony said ahead of launch that PS5 owners could update their consoles with more storage using a second m.2 SSD, the company said it is still working on implementing this feature, and there is no timetable for when it will be available.

On the other hand, for PS5 owners who play games with friends using a PS4, Sony has now enabled Share Play across generations, meaning PS5 owners can live stream their gameplay to friends with older consoles or even PS5 demos. (or PS4 demos). by the way) on one of the two most recent console generations of PlayStation.

Sony has also added additional control and personalization options to the PS5’s Game Base menu, which should make it easier to throw parties, switch between different chats, or turn off notifications when you’re in a room that has a lot of notification spam.

The update also includes some minor adjustments, like the ability to set your PS5 to pre-download automatic updates (assuming the developer has that setting enabled), turn off game chat completely or adjust the volume of a specific player, and an improved search for your game library with the option to hide specific titles if you wish. There’s even a new Trophy Settings and Stats screen where you can more easily see trophy progress at a glance and specify which types of trophies (gold / platinum) trigger automatic screenshots or gameplay recordings.

Finally, Sony also updates the PlayStation app on mobile devices to make it easier to see when your friends are online, create wish lists for games to buy, or remotely set the online status of your PS5. And in the “coming weeks”, Sony will add the ability to participate in multiplayer games, manage your PS5’s storage, compare trophies and more – all from the PlayStation app.
