You can only get the 500GB Jet Black right now
It begins!
Like all major hardware purges, Sony starts with Japan. It happened with the Vita, and now it’s going to happen with the PS4.
As reported by Game Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will be phasing out all PS4 Pro models and all PS4 Slim models except one. Basically, the only PS4 actively sold by Sony in Japan is the PS4 slim 500GB Jet Black model. As Gematsu points out, the “OG” PS4 has already been discontinued.
While the PS4 had a fantastic run, racking up 113.5 million units, and still counting (putting it squarely in the top five best-selling console list of all time, right above the original PlayStation), Sony is clearly looking to the future here.
There are many considerations when it comes to hardware such as physical store shelf space, manufacturing issues, and overhead. Sony must meet PS5 demand and get hardware from everyone they can; and leave an era of PS5 “lotteries” and chaos. For Sony this is the beginning of a new era. For PlayStation fans and collectors, this is the end of one.
