A Starbucks official said out of an excess of caution and in view of the safety of partners and customers that the decision had been made to close the stores.
Eyewitness News stopped at two Starbucks locations, and both had signs on their windows saying they were temporarily closed.
Operations are expected to resume Monday.
No major protests or disruptions have been reported in NYC so far.

Meanwhile, some state capitals have been closed, gates are up, and additional police are on duty at state houses in the US as authorities brace themselves for potentially violent demonstrations in the coming days.
The heightened security measures were intended to protect government seats from the kind of violence that took place in the US Capitol on Jan. 6, when a supporter of President Donald Trump swarmed the building as Congress certified the Electoral College’s vote.
The FBI has warned of the possibility of armed protests at the Capitol and all 50 state capital buildings starting this weekend.
Some social media posts focused on Sunday for demonstrations, although it remained unclear how many people would show up.
