Some Michiganders no longer receive extra weeks of unemployment benefits

Some Michigan residents who were previously eligible will not be given additional weeks unemployment benefits, the state revealed.

Michigan is no longer at a peak unemployment period, so claimants who receive extended benefits and pandemic unemployment assistance will no longer receive them for additional weeks, according to government officials.

Residents affected by this change in benefits have been notified, officials said.

A high unemployment period arises when unemployment in the state reaches a certain threshold. Under federal law, during a period of high unemployment, a state receives seven additional weeks of PUA and EB benefits.

Because Michigan is no longer in a high unemployment spell, officials say those seven extra weeks are not being paid.

For residents who receive additional benefits that have already been paid out the maximum number of weeks, their claim is considered exhausted and there are no more weeks of additional benefits available, government officials said.

Those residents may be eligible for benefits through another program. They will be notified when they can apply.

For residents receiving pandemic unemployment benefits, the maximum number of weeks was reduced from 57 to 50.
