MacBook and iPad production has reportedly been hit by a shortage of electronic components.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Nikkei Asia reported on Thursday that the persistent global shortage of chips has now hit Apple, with a number of iPads and MacBooks affected. Nikkei Asia reported that some iPad assembly was impacted by a shortage of display components, while MacBook production has slowed due to chip shortages – an issue affected major manufacturers such as Tesla, GM and Samsung.

Apple did not immediately return a request for comment on the report.

Nikkei Asia reported that Apple has delayed some of its parts orders for affected gadgets from the first half of 2021 to later in the year due to the ongoing issue. But Apple is certainly not alone in being hit by a chip shortage. And a little estimates see the problem continuing into 2022, also from the Apple vendor Foxconn

Samsung, for example, is another major manufacturer hit by chip shortages, with co-Chief Executive Officer Koh Dong-jin saying at a recent shareholders’ meeting that there was “a serious imbalance in the supply and demand of chips in the IT sector worldwide.”

General Motors, meanwhile, is halting production at two of its plants due to the global component shortage, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday. General Motors spokesman David Barnas told the paper that “the goal is to make up for as much lost production at these factories as possible.”

In other words, everyone is feeling the chip crisis right now. Even the most powerful manufacturer in the world is reportedly not immune to component shortages.
