Hackers who accessed government networks through SolarWinds software may have had access to about 3% of the Justice Department email accounts, but there is no indication that they had access to secret systems, a DOJ spokesman said in a statement Wednesday.
The Chief Information Officer’s DOJ office learned of the Christmas Eve hack, according to the statement, where agents were given access to the department’s Microsoft Office 365 email environment.
“As part of its ongoing technical analysis, the department has determined that the activity is a major incident under the Federal Information Security Modernization Act and is taking steps consistent with that provision,” said the spokesman. “The department will continue to inform appropriate federal agencies, Congress and the public as warranted.”
On Tuesday, US intelligence agencies said Russians were likely behind the breach, which affected multiple government agencies. Microsoft was also a victim of the hack, Reuters reported in December.
