Sunday forecast: snow, snow and more snow

Snowfall totals greater than 6 to 9 inches have already been reported in some locations west and south of Chicago, according to the National Weather Service. At the NWS office in Romeoville, 9.5 inches of snow was recorded as of 7am Sunday, and more is expected as winds from Lake Michigan help feed additional totals in the northern portions of NBC 5’s viewing area.

The snow begins to end in the western suburbs in the early afternoon hours, with the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs potentially seeing snow persist well into the evening, according to current forecast models.

In total, an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow can be expected in most locations, with locally heavier totals possible, especially near Lake Michigan.

Temperatures drop from low to mid 30’s until Sunday.

The start of the working week starts dry, so local residents have plenty of time to clean up after the heavy snowfall of the weekend. Temperatures are expected to drop slightly, but by Thursday the highs could potentially rise into the low-40s if another weather system approaches the region.
