Peter King got me thinking.
In his latest article, he proposed a ridiculous seven-to-one trade-off between the 49ers and the Houston Texans, in which San Francisco 49ers would send Fred Warner, Mike McGlinchey, Jimmy Garoppolo, a first-round pick in 2021. round pick in 2022, a second round pick in 2021 and a third round pick in 2022 to Houston for Deshaun Watson.
Why is this hypothetical trade ridiculous? Because the Texans would never accept it. It is not enough. It’s essentially two first-round tips and Warner, worth a first-rounder, and then a few Day 2 picks, and then Garoppolo and McGlinchey.
Perhaps the Texans would take Garoppolo into the deal as a temporary bridge replacement for Watson. But why would they want McGlinchey? He’s no good, and he’s not worth much. Maybe a pick from the fifth round. He just doesn’t move the needle in this box. He’s a throw-in. Literally the least valuable of the seven possessions.
So King tried. Give him credit. He even called McGlinchey a cornerstone player, who is rich.
How about replacing McGlinchey in the hypothetical trade with another former first-round pick that still holds value?
I’m talking about Javon Kinlaw.
Kinlaw was the 14th pick in last year’s draft. Many teams gave him points in the first round, so many teams should still like him even though he didn’t produce during his rookie season. Teams will say he was just a rookie, and he didn’t have OTAs or mini camp, and he still has potential.
Unlike McGlinchey, a well-known bust.
The Texans will most likely wait until after June 1 to trade Watson so they can save $ 15 million in cap space. This means it is still possible that Watson will land on the 49ers. Perhaps the Texans would be interested in a trading package that includes Kinlaw – they definitely need a defensive tackle to replace JJ Watt.
Something to think about.
