Shooting at the Ohio vigil left 1 dead and 5 injured, the sheriff said

One person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting that took place Saturday during a vigil for a shooting victim in Columbus, Ohio.

CNN reported that the shooting took place in a Dollar General’s parking lot where a vigil was held for Jarrin Hickman, who had been murdered there a year earlier.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, a dark SUV drove past the wake around 7:30 p.m. and began firing at the crowd, hitting five people, including a 12-year-old child. All five people were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Latoya Carpenter, 39, was not part of the wake and was driving past the Dollar General when the shooting began. A bullet hit Carpenter in the head, causing her car to collide with a car parked near the store, CNN reported. Carpenter was pronounced dead on the spot.

There are currently no suspects and an investigation is underway.

This shooting is because activists have again called for gun control in light of a series of mass shootings in the US, including in Atlanta, Boulder, Colo. And Indianapolis.
