This is all wild, vague, and I’m kind of in favor of it
Yu Suzuki will always remain a legend for what he did with the Shenmue series. But many people forget that he was one of the main guests at Sega AM2, which pumps out hits like pumping out After Burner and Space Harrier; they were featured in Shenmue years later as arcade games.
He is now over 60 years old and apparently still has as much passion for the industry as he did in the 80s: the long road to getting Shenmue III made is testament to that. So what’s next after that above revival? Well, hopefully more Shenmue so we can really see through the story! After all, it was more than 20 years ago.
However, for the foreseeable future, things could get a little crazy in his studio, Ys Net. He recently caught up with Famitsu to vaguely tease what’s coming in 2021, and his keywords were “shooting / RPG.” Okay … I can more or less follow that.
He then shared his ambitions for 2021, namely ‘thinking about mutual battles’ and the phrase ‘continuation’. So the sequel is likely Shenmue IV, but I wonder if the “shooting” part is Suzuki getting bitten by the Battle Royale bug.
However, there are apparently there plan, and Shenmue III has not declared the studio bankrupt (Suzuki said the performance was “fine” earlier this year). I’m hopeful for what we’ll see next.
