MADRID – Sergio Ramos will undergo surgery on the meniscus in his left knee this weekend, ESPN confirms. The white captain has made the decision on the recommendation of Real Madrid’s medical service and will be out for at least six weeks.
Ramos was injured earlier this season and the problem has dragged on ever since. He could no longer play the Spanish Super Cup match against Athletic Club, nor the Copa del Rey match against Alcoyano in which Madrid was eliminated against a Second B team.
Ramos has always wanted to avoid surgery, according to ESPN, but the club’s medical service has advised him to stop and recover as soon as possible.
The waiting time is estimated to be at least six weeks, depending on the recovery periods. Therefore, Ramos would miss the draw against Atalanta and the league matches against Huesca, Getafe, Valencia, Valladolid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid, doubting that he could reach the games against Elche and Celta Vigo in time.
The injury comes at the most unexpected moment when he is plunged into full contract extension. ESPN reported months ago that the defender’s intent is to renew for Real Madrid, with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City very alert to Ramos’ future. No decision has yet been made on his future, but it is clear that the injury will not dispel doubts about where the Real Madrid captain will play next season.
