A Pokemon fan was shocked when their parents revealed a gift they lost over 20 years ago: a sealed copy of Pokemon Blue for the Nintendo Game Boy! The story was posted on Reddit by user Lanai, who also shared an image of the game, looking just as pristine as it did when it was released in North America in 1998. As many users have noted, sealed copies of the game are worth it. a significant amount on eBay. A 9.4 rated specimen can currently be found for around $ 20,000, and it’s not hard to imagine this specimen getting a similar mark.

The earliest Pokemon merchandise usually goes for very hefty bucks at this point, especially if it’s got a high rating. It’s worth noting, however, that Lanai has no plans to sell the game. In a follow-up post, the Reddit user explained that their parents planned to give them the game as a birthday present. When it got lost, they bought a copy Pokemon Red, instead. Lanai went into detail about how much the Pokemon franchise has meant to them, and all the great memories they have of playing the games with family members. As such, the gift is much more meaningful than the money!
Given the huge popularity of Pokemon red and blue, it is not surprising that sealed copies are worth so much. After all, most people who bought the game were more likely to break it open to play, rather than stay sealed. In fact, this is why many older games tend to sell so much to collectors!
It’s a lot of fun to hear stories like this. At a time when everyone seems to be looking for Pokemon merch that can be flipped for a lot of money, a longtime fan of the franchise was given the kind of gift everyone would love! Maybe Lanai will eventually decide to sell, but for now they have an incredible new piece for their Pokemon collection.
