The crack discovered in October in the hull of the Russian part of the International Space Station could have been caused by the impact of a micrometeorite.

It is the view of the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, who suggested, during an interview on the television channel Russia 24, as an alternative that the damage could also be of a ‘technological’ nature, although he gave no further details.

While the space station crew has already located and repaired the rift, a more permanent fix is expected once the special repair team arrives at the orbital complex in February.

Quoted by sputniknews, the Roscosmos boss also said the story about the rift is exaggerated.

The Russian part of the ISS, the Zvezda module, has been leaking air since September 2019. In October, the crack was discovered in the module’s intermediate chamber and repaired by cosmonauts stationed on the space station.

A special repair kit is expected to be delivered in February to permanently repair the damage. Sergei Krikalev, executive director of manned programs at Roscosmos, said the crew is looking for another possible air leak in the module.
