San Francisco 49ers lose Martin Mayhew to Washington

The 49ers won’t lose player staff vice president Adam Peters, but they will losing VP of player staff Martin Mayhew to the Washington Football Team per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he will not take over as general manager as the team will hire Marty Hurney for the position.

With Hurney taking the title of general manager, Mayhew’s departure means the 49ers will not be awarded a compensatory draft pick in the third round. The expanded Rooney rule requires minority candidates to be hired as head coach and general manager to receive those extra draft picks.

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote that San Francisco does not expect compensation.

Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as a senior hiring manager. Prior to the 2019 season, he received a promotion to VP from the player staff. Before coming to San Francisco, Mayhew spent a year in the front office of the New York Giants. Before that, he spent 15 seasons with the Detroit Lions, including seven as general manager.
