San Diego Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has been placed on the list with 10 days injured but will not require surgery following the latest injury to his troublesome left shoulder, general manager AJ Preller said Tuesday.
Tatis was injured on Monday after a hard swing and left the 3-2 loss of San Diego to the San Francisco Giants. The Padres said on Monday that Tatis had suffered a shoulder subluxation, which is a partial dislocation of the joint.
Preller said on Tuesday that further exams showed a slight labral tear consistent with a subluxation. He said the injury is “non-surgical.”
The Padres hope that Tatis can return within 10 days. Preller said the short stop has full range of motion and he wanted to be in the lineup on Tuesday.
“Overall, I think it’s just safe for us, causing the left shoulder to become inflamed and some of the instability [a] chance to calm down, ”Preller said.
Padres manager Jayce Tingler told reporters after the Giants game that Tatis had experienced minor dislocations in the past, but said Monday’s incident was the most pain he had ever seen Tatis in. realized. “
Tatis collapsed in pain after a swing and missed on a 2-2 pitch by San Francisco player Anthony DeSclafani in the third inning, leaving Petco Park in silence. He walked off the field with the help of Tingler and a trainer, slapping his left arm against his body.
Tatis also left a game late in spring practice with left shoulder discomfort after making a backhand game, but returned two days later. Tingler then said that since his minor league days, Tatis had been dealing with left shoulder discomfort. Tatis later said he’d had it since the rookie ball.
Tatis, 22, struggled through the first five games of this season, hitting only .167 and committed five errors, although he hit a 465-foot homerun on Sunday in loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He signed the longest contract in big league history on February 22 – a 14-year deal worth $ 340 million.
If Tatis is sidelined for an extended period, Tingler said San Diego’s “first option” would be with short stop rookie Ha-Seong Kim, who replaced Tatis on Monday. Jake Cronenworth, Jorge Mateo and Tucupita Marcano could also potentially play shortstop.
