Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Health and Human Services Agency with data through Jan. 18.

ICU Capacity and Stay Home Order:

  • Current intensive care unit (ICU) bed availability for the Southern California region is 0.0% and is updated daily by the state.
  • The Regional home order is in effect and prohibits gatherings of any size with people from other households and adds restrictions for multiple sectors.
  • The order will last until ICU availability of the region is 15% or more.

Outbreaks in the community:

  • On January 18, seven new outbreaks were confirmed in the community: three in TK-12 school settings, two in corporate settings, one in a government setting, and one in a hotel / resort / spa setting.
  • No new outbreaks were confirmed in the community on January 17.
  • Twelve outbreaks in the community were confirmed on January 16: five in daycare / kindergarten / daycare, two in corporate settings, two in government settings, one in an emergency service, one in a health care and one in a retail setting.
  • Seven outbreaks in the community were confirmed on January 15: three in a corporate setting, two in an emergency service, one in a home, and one in a restaurant setting.
  • In the past seven days (Jan. 12 to Jan. 18), 47 outbreaks were confirmed in the community.
  • The number of outbreaks in the community remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.
  • A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in an environment and in people from different households in the past 14 days.

To test:

  • 12,675 tests were reported to the county on Jan. 18, and the rate of new positive cases was 20%.
  • The moving average percentage of positive cases over 14 days is 12.1%. Target is less than 8.0%.
  • The 7-day, daily average of tests is 24,333.
  • People at higher risk for COVID-19 who are with or without symptoms should be tested. People with symptoms should be tested. Healthcare and essential workers should also be tested, as well as people who have been in close contact with a positive case or live in communities that are heavily affected. Those who have recently returned from travel, or who have attended holiday gatherings, are also urged to get tested.

Cases:

  • 2,498 cases were reported to the County on Jan. 18. The total of the region is now 216,835.
  • Hospitalization was required in 8,484 or 3.9% of all cases.
  • 1,314 or 0.6% of all cases and 15.5% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.

Deaths:

  • Six new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the County on Jan. 18. The region’s total is now 2,109.
  • Three women and three men died between December 28 and January 9.
  • Of the six newly reported deaths, five people who had died were 80 years of age or older and one person was in their 70s.
  • They all had underlying medical conditions.
  • No new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the County on Jan. 17.
  • On January 16, 38 new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the County.
  • 13 women and 25 men died between December 29 and January 15.
  • Of the 38 new deaths reported, 14 people who died were 80 years of age or older, 13 people were in their 70s, five people were in their 60s, and six people were in their 50s.
  • 34 had underlying medical conditions and four had a medical history pending.
  • On January 15, 28 new COVID-19 deaths were reported to the County.
  • 14 women and 14 men died between January 1 and January 14.
  • Of the 28 new deaths reported, 12 people who died were aged 80 or older, seven people were in their 70s, six people were in their 60s, and three people were in their 50s.
  • 27 had underlying medical conditions and one had a medical history pending.
