Here is today’s COVID-19 update from the County Health and Human Services Agency with data through March 24.
Progress vaccination:
- Nearly 1.6 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been delivered in the region and more than 1.5 million have been recorded as being administered. This number includes county residents as well as those who work in San Diego County.
- Of those vaccinated so far, more than 519,000 residents of the county, or 19.3% of San Diegans ages 16 and older, have been fully immunized.
- In total, more than 853,000 residents of the county received at least one injection of the two-dose vaccines. That is 31.7% of the eligible persons.
- Those who receive the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine are added to the total of fully vaccinated San Diegans.
- The difference between the doses administered and the doses used in a vaccination roughly represents what is expected to be administered in the next seven days and the doses still to be entered into the registration system.

Status statistics:
- The state-calculated, adjusted number of San Diego County cases is currently 5.5 cases per 100,000 residents. The County is in the Red Tier.
- Currently, the test positivity rate is 2.4%, placing the County in Tier 3 or the Orange Tier.
- The County health equity measure, which looks at the test positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, is 3.4% and is also in the Orange Tier or Tier 3.
- While two of the three statistics qualify the County for the Orange Tier or Tier 3, the state assigns counties to the more restrictive tier.
- The California Department of Public Health reviews counties on a weekly basis. The next report is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30.
Outbreaks in the community:
- Four new outbreaks were confirmed in the community on March 24. Two in business environments, one in a hotel / resort / spa environment and one in a retail environment.
- In the past seven days (March 16 through March 24), 18 outbreaks were confirmed in the community.
- The number of outbreaks in the community remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.
- A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in an environment and in people from different households in the past 14 days.
To test:
- 17,596 tests were reported to the county on March 24, and the rate of new positive cases was 1%.
- The moving average percentage of positive cases over 14 days is 2.5%. Target is less than 8.0%.
- The 7-day, daily mean of tests is 11,441.
Case studies, hospital admissions and IC admissions:
- 210 COVID-19 cases were reported to the County on March 24. The region’s total is now 268,627.
- 14,023 or 5.2% of all cases require hospitalization.
- 1,630 or 0.6% of all cases and 11.6% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
Deaths:
- On March 24, 11 new COVID-19 deaths were reported. The total of the region is 3,520.
- Two women and nine men died between January 19 and March 23.
- Of those who died, four were 80 years old or older, three were in their 70s, one in their 60s, two in their 50s, and one in their 40s.
- Ten had underlying medical conditions and one had a medical history pending.
